M-PESA platform to be hosted in Kenya
Safaricom is set to start hosting the M-PESA platform in Kenya by 2014. The platform which will be owned and managed by Safaricom, is expected to reduce M-PESA'a downtime and improve efficiency.
Currently, M-PESA is hosted and managed by Vodafone Group Plc, the biggest shareholder of Safaricom with a 40 per cent stake.
Safaricom is also negotiating with Vodafone for a new royalty rate. Currently Vodafone levies Safaricom 10 to 25 per cent of M-PESA revenues in royalty.
In an interview with the Nation, Safaricom's ceo, Bob Collymore revealed that specifications for the new M-PESA platform have already been designed and the tendering process has started.
